The fluctuation in performance is very common. When you’re in a bad mood or had a bad night’s sleep, it can all influence your performance. This is known as cognitive variability. In children, this variability can have a lasting impact. Yet, schools often rely on standardized testing moments and use average scores, which might not be the best representation of the child’s ability. I’m therefore especially interested in how this variability works and what can influence it. In my PhD, I’m investigating how early life factors influence cognitive variability and whether there might be a positive aspect to variability.
